HUMANITIES & ARTS DEPARTMENTS
You can choose from many different courses and/or degree programs in Art. Classes in drawing, painting, and ceramics allow you to express yourself in works that you will enjoy for years. You may want to explore Art History while fulfilling general education requirements and learning about expressive techniques from various historical eras. You can also choose to join the digital wave with introductory courses in digital media and design. Explore, create, and express with SJCC Arts.
Through dance education and performance you will learn new awareness of many personal and cultural issues. Choose from courses that meet your General Education requirements, dance with enthusiastic professionals in a style of your choice, or even work towards a career in Dance!
SOCIAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENTS
In the Administration of Justice program you can learn about the functions and relationships of the police, prosecution, courts, probation and correctional systems of the United States.
As a student in the Alcohol and Drug Studies program you will prepare to work with the alcohol and other drug dependent population, and the family and employer of the chemically dependent person.
In Anthropology courses you study the comparative and holistic exploration of the human condition. Students gain exposure to the concepts and methods best suited to the examination of the astonishing range of human experiences across space and time.
Early childhood educators work with children ages birth to eight in a variety of different types of programs. The field of early childhood education or E.C.E. includes teachers and childcare providers, family support workers, home visitors, parent educators and more.
As an Ethnic studies student you can take interdisciplinary courses that will prepare you to think critically about and be an active member of our diverse society. The Ethnic Studies department at SJCC features courses in African American studies, Chicano/Mexican American studies & Vietnamese American studies.
Based on ecological principles, as a family and consumer sciences student you will study how the relationships between individuals, families, communities, and environments influence or effect individual development in a variety of ways.
In Geography courses, you will study human use and interaction with the Earth and the identification of spatial and temporal variation in natural and human processes.
As a student in Global Studies, you will compare regions across the globe to shed light on world issues. Global Studies includes many different fields, including political science, economics, and cultural studies.
Why study history? Simply put, you study history in order to fully understand the complexities of this modern globalized world.
The world of contemporary politics demands much of both its participants and its critics. The study of political science gives you an understanding of the workings of American and international politics.
In the Psychology program you will be able to examine the various subfields in psychology, gain knowledge of and appreciation for scientific inquiry, and develop insight into yourself and increase knowledge of and sensitivity to others. You will learn the basic body of knowledge, thus preparing them for further study in psychology.
Sociology is a broad discipline through which you can scientifically study human group behavior and the consequences of human social patterns. The sociological perspective in conjunction with the perspectives offered through anthropology, criminal justice, geography, and political science rounds out the interdisciplinary approach taken for various majors.
